The importance of good lymphatic drainage

L’importance d’un bon drainage lymphatique

We all know that blood circulates throughout the body, but did you know that the same is true for lymph?

First of all, you might be wondering what lymph is. It's the fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system, the system responsible for removing toxins accumulated in the body. It's part of our immune system and protects us from disease. This system is essentially made up of a network of lymphatic vessels that connect lymph nodes throughout the body. Lymph circulates through these lymph nodes, which act as a filter to destroy waste the body doesn't need. It then returns this waste to the blood, where it is eliminated by the liver and kidneys.

But even if you don't know much about your lymphatic system, you've probably noticed when it's not functioning optimally. If you've ever had a virus or infection, your lymph nodes have likely tried to fight it off. In the process, they often become painful and swollen. The main lymph nodes are located in the throat (cervical lymph node) and under the armpit (axillary lymph node). A throat infection, the flu, or even a bad cold have likely caused pain and swelling in these areas.

What are the other roles of the lymphatic system?

In addition to eliminating toxins accumulated in the body, the lymphatic system fulfills several other essential functions: 1

• It maintains fluid levels in the body: The lymphatic system collects any excess fluid that leaks from cells and tissues. It then returns it to the blood where it circulates again or is eliminated as needed.

• It absorbs fats from the digestive tract: liquids from the intestines containing fats and proteins are collected by the lymph and sent into the blood.

• It protects against external pathogens: The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It produces and releases lymphocytes (white blood cells) and other immune cells that hunt down bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in order to destroy them.

Why is lymphatic system obstruction a problem?

The lymphatic system performs so many crucial functions that problems can arise when it doesn't function properly. Certain situations and conditions can block it. Some result from diseases, conditions, and disorders of the lymphatic system, such as tonsillitis, tonsillitis, cancer, and infected skin wounds. These can lead to enlarged and swollen lymph nodes and a buildup of lymph. Not only does the buildup of lymph cause pain, but it also increases the risk of developing other infections. 2

How to improve lymphatic drainage?

Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn't have a dedicated pumping system. It relies on body movement, intestinal activity, and muscle action to circulate lymph. Here are some tips to keep your lymphatic system functioning properly:

Avoid exposure to toxins : The lymphatic system filters waste, but the more it has to filter, the harder it has to work. By avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals like those found in pesticides and cleaning products, you don't force it to work hard to eliminate these toxins, and it stays healthy.

Drink plenty of water : Good hydration facilitates the circulation of lymph in the body.

Practice regular physical activity : Physical exercise has many health benefits. It can reduce the risk of lymphatic system blockages. Physical activity such as trampolining is an excellent way to get blood and lymph flowing throughout the body.

Take hot and cold showers : It certainly takes some getting used to, but you can create a pump-like action by alternating between hot and cold water (to dilate and contract the vessels in the lymphatic system).

Try dry skin brushing : This treatment stimulates and promotes lymph circulation.

Adopt a diet that is beneficial for the lymphatic system : Fruits, vegetables, low-sugar foods, garlic, Brazil nuts, almonds, and walnuts are all good for the lymphatic system. Conversely, avoid processed foods, sugar, table salt, and soy, which can all contribute to clogging.

Drink herbal teas: Many herbal teas are beneficial for lymphatic health. You can try echinacea, goldenseal, parsley, or indigo lupin root.

For most of us, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is enough to keep our lymphatic system functioning properly. But in this area, as in all others, when in doubt, it's always best to consult a healthcare professional.
